Simply twist off the existing lens cover, and twist on the Mist filter.  The filter is the same size as the original lens, so it does not affect the camera's ability to fit in mounts.

What do Mist filters do?

A Black Mist filter (or diffusion filter) softens your image and "blooms" light sources in the image, giving them a bit of a glow.  The result is a softer image, with a dreamy, ethereal look. There is less contrast, the edges are softer, and the shapes blend in organically.

When should you use a Mist filter?

Mist filters (or diffusion filters) are not specific to a specific genre of videography or photography.  They can be used for filming people, street scenes, architecture, landscapes, and even products.

A Cinematic look to your footage

You use a Mist filter when you want to create a soft atmosphere perceived as cinematic, inviting, friendly, and even romantic. Mist filters can make footage look more cinematic by reducing the sharpness that digital video offers - overly sharp vide does not usually have a "cinematic" look.  In dimmed light a Mist filter blooms lights giving them a nice glow, which creates a dramatic mood in the scene, while in bright light, it may seem heavenly, happy, or inspiring.

A Mist filter for portraits

Portraits often look better with a Mist filter because it hides skin imperfections and blemishes.  It also can make skin look smoother and flatters the person’s features. It also makes the hair look glossy and rich,  especially when backlighting the scene. A mist filter softens the light roll-off that drops on the person’s face from a backlight scene. You do this best by capturing shots from the shadow side of your subject.

Capture emotion and nostalgia

If you have light entering from your windows, you can use a Mist filter to make the window look naturally beautiful and convey a nostalgic feeling. Since mist filters bloom the highlights, you get the best effect if the light entering from the window is highlighting other features in the frame.

Mist filters for nature shots

They also work  wonders for nature videography.  If an otherwise great shot is getting ruined by harsh light or comes at a not-so-flattering angle, a Mist filter will soften the light, and can convey tenderness, grace, fragility, and the passing of time.

Low light

High-strength mist filters are ideal for shooting in low lighting conditions when a visible light source is present (e.g., a street light, a candle, etc.). That’s because they will add a soft glow around the light source, enrich the shadows, and reduce the contrast between highlights and shadows. The result is mystical, dreamy and mesmerizing. You can almost get a fairytale land effect, which enriches your narrative. The cinematic effect goes well with night cityscapes, street life shots, and wedding narratives, even when the light source is not visible.

Golden hour

A great time of the day to try a mist filter is golden hour - the last hour before sunrise and the first hour after sunset. There isn’t much light available, but it is warm and soft. The mist filter will enhance the effect, creating deeper shadows and blending in the edges between light and shadows. Making the scenery look smooth, without being blurred.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Remove the existing lens/cover by twisting 90 degrees parallel with the GoPro.  Pulling away from the camera slightly may help.
  2. Place the Camera Butter Mist filter on your GoPro with the metal bars on the filter oriented horizontally
  3. While pushing down towards the GoPro, twist the filter 90 degrees until it is square on the GoPro.  DO NOT push on the ring, only push on the frame of the filter.
  4. Make sure that the filter is seated correctly and is flush with the camera.   If it is crooked or can be removed easily, remove and re-install.
